QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
My child is learning disabled. Would she benefit from instruction at NJL COLLEGE PREPARATION?
We have tutored students with a variety of learning problems for over 20 years, so we are very familiar with the particular challenges that important standardized tests (SAT I, SAT II, ACT) pose to your child. If you opt to take private instruction, naturally the tutoring will be tailored to your child's needs. You can also select the small group tutorials which are beneficial to the learning disabled student. The groups are limited to very few (4-6) students, and the teachers of your child's group will be notified in advance of your child's needs. When we administer practice test, your child will be given the modifications that are available to her on the actual exam.
What about the child who has already scored very well on a PSAT, SAT I/II or ACT? Would he benefit from the program?
Yes! Yes! Yes! Even students with perfect scores on their PSAT'S (with our instruction) have returned for SAT instruction and found it of value. There are always strategies to be taught, no matter how bright the student.
My child took the PSAT in 10th grade and scored very well. Can his scores be used for the National Merit Qualifying Test?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Only the PSAT/NMSQT that is taken in October of your son's junior year (Grade 11) is utilized for the National Merit exam.
How much will my child's score increase after completing instruction with NJL?
Naturally, a student gets out of the instruction what he/she puts into it. Many students have gone up as much as 500 points! Our average score increase is 100-200 points.
Can I take an SAT or ACT more than once? Yes, you can and you probably should take the SAT and/or ACT more than once. Both tests allow Score Choice which means that you have the option of sending or not sending your scores to colleges. Therefore, why not send your best scores, not your only scores.
Can I send my best scores for individual subtest on the SAT or ACT?
Unfortunately, no. You can choose which administration of each test to send, but you cannot "mix and match" among the tests.
Does the Essay score on the SAT count or are colleges only interested in a student's scores in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math?
The best advice that we can give is to contact several colleges and ask that question. Each college differs in what is important for admission, and those criteria may also change from one year to the next.
My child entered middle school this year and seems to be completely disorganized. Can you help him?
Of course we can. We have a specialist on staff who teaches Study Skills. The transition from elementary school to middle school can be difficult for some children. They now have separate teachers in each class and must deal with the demands on their time and effort. We have found that a few sessions dealing specifically with Study Skills are very useful to the student.
My child is in third grade and has some difficulties in reading. Can you help her?
Yes! We have a separate staff for elementary school children, a staff that includes reading specialists, math teachers and elementary school teachers. Lessons are available 7 days a week.
With all the companies and tutors available, why should we come to NJL COLLEGE PREPARATION?
There are several reasons that we feel uniquely qualified to provide instruction:
1. Unlike many other companies, our company consists of teachers with at least 10 years experience in their field of expertise. We don't hire "kids," college students or graduate students.
2. Each subject area is taught by a specialist. We feel that your child's grades and test scores are far too important to allow an English teacher to teach both verbal and math portions of the SAT or ACT. That is why each course has at least 2 teachers.
3. We have been in the same location for over 20 years: 880 Willis Avenue, Albertson. We are not "fly by night" or unreachable.
4. We believe that our results speak for themselves. Over 90% of our students come from personal referral.
5. We are co-authors of over 20 books and software on all facets of subject and test preparation. We are truly "experts."
My child took a review course at the local JCC and was unhappy with the lack of control in the class. How is NJL COLLEGE PREPARATION different?
We do not have issues of classroom control at NJL. Our courses are structured and time-efficient. Students are engaged the entire time that they spend with us. We do not allow anything else!
